In the crisis-affected regions of Mali, community learning centers are giving new hope to children and communities

Mali remains one of the poorest and most conflict-stricken countries in the world, creating a particularly harsh environment for children. During times of conflict, they are the most vulnerable, suffering grave violations of their rights, including killing, maiming, forced recruitment into armed groups, abduction, attacks on schools and hospitals, restricted humanitarian aid, and sexual violence. As security continues to deteriorate, central Mali’s Mopti region has become a focal point of violence, leading to the closure of 1700 schools since 2018, depriving thousands of children of their right to education. Although in 2024, some schools have begun reopening with support from international grants, many children remain unable to return due to the persistent instability and ongoing unrest in the region.

In response to this crisis, a community learning center is providing a safe space for children to heal and continue learning. The center fosters an environment where children can support one another while developing essential skills such as reading, writing, and math. Through drawing, they express both their hopes and their fears, offering a glimpse into their resilience amid the ongoing security crisis.
WorldHarvest is establishing a community learning center to support Fulani' tribe children in preparing for their return to school once the government reopens schools in Sévaré, as well as, giving them a trauma therapy to heal from their painful experience in the past.
