Training World Class Leaders from Underdeveloped Provinces

Background
More than half of Indonesia's 234 million people are vulnerable to poverty. In 2007, the World Bank estimated that 53% of Indonesia’s population (some 124 million) still live below the international standard poverty line of USD $2 a day.
Poverty is not just a matter of inadequate income, and expenditure on food and daily necessities. Many of the poor also lack access to basic education, medical services and adequate nutrition. Some 25 million plus Indonesians are illiterate.
World Harvest is committed to training and creating leaders in underdeveloped regions. As part of that commitment, World Harvest has offered scholarships to students from remote provinces in eastern Indonesia to attend the World Harvest College of Information Management and Computers (STIMIK). Studying cutting-edge technology and English, they will be well-equipped to return to their provinces and lead the process of transformation.
The Vision
Through programs such as Adopt-A-Leader and Sponsor-A-Leader, World Harvest aspires to help the Government of Indonesia develop new approaches to education, manpower enrichment, poverty reduction, and provide better district level governance for Eastern Indonesia. We equip students with three areas of expertise - Theology (Christian character), Technology and English Language Competency. Through these scholars, we are investing in great leaders to later transform Indonesia.
Why Eastern Indonesia? It is the home of a large Christian population and includes Indonesia's poorest provinces. We are concentrating our efforts on those with little or no formal education. More than half the population of Eastern Indonesia has income below the poverty line as defined by the World Bank.
